Tumescent liposuction is a relatively straight forward procedure.  The cosmetic surgeon first injects a anesthetic solution (which is comprised of lidocaine and epinephrine) into the patient’s body.  This solution causes the patient’s fat deposits to swell while shrinking the capillaries.  As a result, the cosmetic surgeon is able to remove more fat and create a more contoured look.

The actual fat deposits are removed with a device called a cannula (in a process very similar to how a home vacuum cleaner works).

Because of the way the anesthetic solution works, there is significantly less bleeding than when compared to the other liposuction methods.  Additionally, the levels of swelling and bruising are noticeably less.

Additionally, since the cosmetic surgeon uses a solution composed of lidocaine, there is no need for general anesthesia.  As a result of this solution, there is less of a probability of the patient suffering a bad reaction to anesthesia.  This is because medical studies have found there is generally more risk associated with general anesthesia than with a local anesthetic.

Lastly, since the cannula used in this surgery is often smaller than the ones used in the other liposuction methods, tumescent liposuction patients are often able to recover more quickly.  This is because the surgeon is able to make smaller incision to remove the fat deposits.
